It seems that Breezy has the new user privilege 'Enable access to external 
storage devices automatically'.  As this option was not available in 
Hoary, and the dist-upgrade did not set it for the user it did of course 
not work.

This is very tricky and I wonder why the upgrade did not set the 
permissions for the privileged user or at least warn me about the new 
option (I upgraded one week before final).

Setting this option and everything is fine now.
