Can't get USB memory stick to work

Hi..
I have a 512 MB HP DriveKey USB memory stick.
I plug it in, and nothing happens.
I then check the 'Disks' panel in the Administration menu. I do see
it listed!
I now manually give it a place to mount. I created a folder
/media/memorystick and then click 'enable'.
I CAN NOW READ MY FILES SUCCESSFULLY! I still don't see it in 'My
Computer' though.
And more seriously, I cannot copy files TO the memory stick!
I CAN copy files to the memory stick when I open a root-terminal
window.
Obviously it's an access permissions problem.
Why is this so difficult? It's my own USB stick, people (users) who
plug it in SHOULD have write access to their own &@*#*&@#$ stick it by
default! This is just wrong.
Anyway, how can I fix this, preferably without going into config files
manually? (Though if that's what it takes then I'll do it)
Cheers,
Chanchao
