Hi Jose,
It sounds like you know more about this stuff than I do, but I did
just install Ubuntu 5.10 on an IBM machine with Nvidia video card.
This information from the the Ubuntu web site really helped me out:
http://help.ubuntu.com/starterguide/C/faqguide-all.html#installnvidiadriver
Then at some point I updated the video-config-type-thing
#sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
