Serial Mouse

    Has anyone figured out how to get a serial mouse to work? I followed 
instructions found on the Wiki: "Howto install a serial mouse" to edit 
the xorg.conf file. I was told I am not the owner and I could not edit, 
as the file is read only. I am new to Linux but all the other Linux's I 
tried had no problems with serial mouse. Can you tell me how to be owner 
so I can edit xorg.conf?
    The Wiki instructions to reconfigure xserver-xorg don't work at all 
for Breezy Badger. The option to select the mouse port does not come up. 
I was so looking forward to using Ubuntu. So far I've wasted two days on 
a problem that should not exist. Looks nice though. Mark
