I am testing it on Dapper (righting this from Dapper ;-).
It's difficult to tell you if "it" is faster, because Gnome is not a
monolithic affair. The Gnome boys are working on various parts/aspects
of the Desktop to speed things up, but as Julio pointed out, the
introduction of Cairo is said to slow Gtk down a bit.
Also, Ubuntu are doing further work of their own to further speed Gnome
(and not just Gnome) up.
I can't really sense the overall gtk slow down, however I can certainly
feel that Gnome is significantly faster to start up. And I very much
appreciate it. This coupled with faster boot times, faster log-out / X
start up times, all add up to the feeling that Dapper, at least on my
machine, feels delightfully more responsive/snappy/"light" than Breezy.
I won't be looking back :-)
HTH ?!
