Samba problem

What about this?  On another distro (I'm new to Ubuntu), I've had trouble
accessing files in a directory to which I (as root) had given myself (as user)
unrestricted access.  I found that I had to extend the access to the
directory recursively using chmod.  Ubuntu would not recognise you as the owner
of the file if you are not logged in as the user.  Maybe??
