I had the same problem.  You can try to kill the esd process (ps -ef ,
then kill the process id)  then restart esd (I used system -->
preferences --> Multimedia System Selecter and then tested my sound). 
That did the trick for me with gizmo.

yes.  Generally the ones available inside Ubuntu repositories are a
lot better than 3rd- party applications (Gizmo, Skype, Realplayer,
etc).
