The notification icon does change, but it's global.
I think the OP is requesting that it show status -per- protocol, as
well as allowing one to connect invisibly to ICQ or 'away from office'
to Yahoo without being available - then setting it after connect.
Of course, this is the wrong place for this really, since we're not
gaim developers :)
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gaim/ -- would be a better place to
start ones quest for features.
On the other hand, today is supposed to mark the release of Gaim 2.0.
