NOTSOLVED: removable Media

I have the exact same problem, except that the presented solution does not 
work on my system :-(

Plugging in a storage device generates the /dev/sda1 device, but does not 
get mounted.  Mounting by hand then brings up the desktop icon.

Any other ideas what I could look for?
