Here the carrier only gets detected after the "username:" prompt.
Have you tried "Stupid Mode" yet?

"Supposed to" frequently does not equal reality. :-(
On my system wvdial logs nothing - all I have is the chirping of pppd. I'm
happy with that, so have not changed it.
Getting logging to work is in the doc's, but is far too much work.

Works beautifully over here, the only one in fact to give me consistently good
results.
Can you show me your wvdial.conf, please.
