Unix is categorised ???

A quick one for the old knowledgeable Unix veterans on here ;-)

A friend gave me some web-space on a server. I notice that when I ftp to
it (with gftp as a client), the server identifies itself as "Unix type:
L8".

I tried googling for that but in vain.

So far my understanding is that there are bags of different Unixes with
only minor differences between them, just like there are zillions of
Linux distributions. I didn't know there were any major differences that
lead to sort them in as many categories/types !

If anyone has 5 spare minutes to shed some light ?! :o)
