Thanks oli for the link , from which I glean this little gem:

When this says "by default" does this mean these gui utilities would 
all become broken if I did a 
# apt-get remove sudo
or would they fall back on asking for the root password to do root 
things???

However I have a closed system...

And while I haven't read all the ubuntu specific arguments for sudo and
against all my near instinctive administration habits, I have previously
been exposed to those who think root user shouldn't exist. I was not
convinced that it provided any real security advantage on a closed system
where any user has physical access to the cpu/hard drive case...

Those habits include, by the way, that when using kde, if I want a
root term for a few minutes I call a script at the alt+F2 run prompt
that contains one of the following depending on distro or kde version:

kdesu "konsole --ls"

#! /bin/bash
kdesu konsole

#! /bin/bash
konsole -type su

#! /bin/bash
kdesu konsole-noxft

All of which set the background of konsole to roots color configuration
which I don't use any where else. Which visual reminder helps me to be
careful what I do with THAT shell, and to close it when I'm done. 

But it's hard to set root konsole colors if you don't fire up the
konsole as root user (as in user ID not just privaliges...)
