Installation of Educational Packages

KDE applications should work in gnome without any problem. Otherwise, 
you can type the line:

sudo apt-get install edubuntu-desktop

This will have the effect of installing edubuntu but without a major 
part of the download which you have already got in your ubuntu system.

As for GCC. To install the tools you need for basic compiling, open a 
terminal and type:

sudo apt-get install gcc-3.3 gcc-3.4 gcc-4.0 build-essential
