Thanks for the tip. I was trying to remember the syntax but I'd got it wrong.
That has worked, inasmuch as it's given me a working X server again,
but my Xinerama setup has gone - now the 2nd screen merely mirrors the
first.
However, it has allowed me to finish the upgrade. It's worked but it's
very messy now; GNOME boots with a series of errors, many about
"progman.icn" or something like that, and it's left my old 2.6.8
kernel in place, tho' init now complains. I can't even find a 2.6.11
kernel in synaptic's list of packages. How does one upgrade that part?
