Does Ubuntu 5.10 work "out of the box" every time with the Mac mini? Having problems booting a new install.

As per the subject: does Ubuntu work flawlessly with the Mac mini out
of the box?
The reason I ask...
I just installed Ubuntu 5.10 (from a ShipIt disk) to a 5.2 GB
partition (first partition on the drive) and it doesn't boot properly.
It'll get to yaboot and go past a little bit but then the monitor goes
dead and I see (and hear) no activity whatsoever from the CPU (if I
listen really carefully and all other sources of noise are off I can
hear the HD).
This is a bog-standard install: 1.25 GHz, upgraded to 512 MB RAM, 40
GB HD (partitioned 35 GB OS X 10.4 and 5.2 GB partition Ubuntu 5.10),
17" KDS Avitron VGA-connected monitor (capable of 1280x1024, 1152*864,
1024*768, 832*624, 800*600, 640*480 and a variety of non-standard
sizes).
The Mac mini booted fine with the Live CD.
Any ideas? (yes, I realise I haven't provided much info... I don't
*have* much info ;-).
Eric.
