upgrading kernel in VMware Virtual machine of dapper kills the VM

Could you tell me the actual version of the linux-image itself
(linux-image-2.6.15-6-386 or -7-386, most likely).

Also, try adding BusLogic to initramfs module list and run
"update-initramfs -u -k 2.6.15-7-386"

You may also want to try and see if switching vmware to use the IDE disk
simulation instead of the SCSI disk works too.
