upgrading kernel in VMware Virtual machine of dapper kills the VM

How can we do that ? I can't see any options to do that :-/
The CD-ROM drive has options to select a SCSI or IDE virtual device
node, but for the hard-drive, I can only select SCSI device nodes,
nothing refers to IDE nodes...
