Of course, I'm using 2.6.10-6-386 which is fine.

Yes.  Don't choose 2-6-12-9 kernel (use something else that works) :-P

Ahem!  Do you have a kernel that doesn't have this problem and if so,
what is it?

(And as I mentioned in an earlier post that kernel has had security
updates.)
