network printer detection

Hi all.
I am experiencing some problems with printing.
I have a printer in another machine (Debian), using CUPS server.
When i try to print something, all the applications freeze and i have to 
kill them.
When i run gnome-cups-manager as user, nothing happens and as root I got 
an error in GTK (cannot open display).
Any tips here?
