how do you network two Ubuntu computers with a crossover cable?

I can't try right now... but I don't know what I would ping anyway. Just the
host name of the machine, the name that appears after user@ in a terminal?
Or do I ping the IP address I have assigned the machine in
System-Administration-Networking?
