To anyone interested:
Baobab leaves some slime behind when it is uninstalled.  I did a 
complete uninstall with Synaptic, then a new install;  And the same 
crash occurs.  Apparently, some hidden config file is left behind but 
without the name 'baobab'.  I tried updatedb/locate baobab and found 
only the files in ~/.gconf/apps/baobab.  Even deleting these files 
didn't affect anything.  It still crashes after a clean reinstall.
