Did you mean to say "5.10" (Breezy) instead of 5.1? I've successfully used
both PPC and i386 5.10 live cds on several pieces of hardware. If you
really
meant 5.1, I don't think I have anything to offer (the oldest I used was
5.4 Hoary).

When it hangs, can you get into another console (i.e. ctrl-alt-F1 or
ctrl-alt-F2)?
If you can, you can use dmesg to see the console messages which might
give a clue. Also, there might be error messages on the ctrl-alt-F4 (or
other)
console.

If that doesn't work, try booting live-expert, just hitting return for
most of the
questions it asks which are different than the normal boot, and at the end
when it asks what run level to go into, type 1 (i.e. the numeral one).
 After
you see the message about terninating all the processes, you should be able
to type ctrl-alt-F1 and then ctrl-alt-F8 and be in single user mode. If
you
haven't had any errors so far, you can look at the dmesg output to see
what devices it detected as the kernel was coming up and if it got serious
errors using them.
