Font problems - blurry text and bold fonts

You might want to check to make sure that "font auto-hint" is not 
enabled. I once enabled it and noticed that it did blur the fonts like 
cleartype (anti-alias).

Specifically points 4 and 5:

sudo gedit /etc/fonts/local.conf


Make sure that the section in question actually *IS* commented out (so 
that it is ignored by the system). I think you may need to restart the 
X-server (CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE) or maybe reboot the system if you edit 
this file.
