courier-imapd and PAM

Hiya,

As what I thought would be a straight-forward way to read my
localhost's mail in thunderbird I installed the courier-imapd package.

I am now able to telnet to localhost 143 and it connects to the imap
server.  So it is installed and working.

However, if (on the same machine) I try to connect with thunderbird it
refuses to let me log in.

As courier-imapd is set to defaultly use authpam, I'm guessing this
might have something to do with PAM?

Any suggestions what I have to do to get it up and running?  I want to
just use my normal user password to access the mail.
