Applications -> System Tools -> Configuration Editor

This brings up gconf editor. Then

/ -> apps -> nautilus -> desktop

The check box that says "Volumes Visable" should be unchecked.

Be careful though as this will mean you will no longer see cd's, dvd's
or usb key drives on your desktop when they are mounted.  Youll still be
able to see them in the "Places" on the menu bar and under "Computer"
