Audacity useless gotten from synaptic

Try turning off system sounds

System - Preferences - Sound

uncheck/ untick  "Sounds for Events"

Audacity wants exclusive access to /dev/dsp and doesn't understand esd, it
seems. You will also get the error if anything else is using sound ( music
players etc )
