Thank you, HTH. My first problem was that it wasn't clear to me that the 
  word 'multiverse' had to be appended to the repository spec in the 
repository list.  Fixing that allowed the installation of 
gstreamer0.8-plugins-multiverse.  I couldn't find w32codecs and used the 
directions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats, which you 
offered in your first reply.  This involved manually downloading it and 
using dpkg to install it.  At any rate, Synaptic shows everything 
installed except  gst-register-0.8.  I don't know what that is.  Without 
an apt-get, I must assume that it is a command, which is not understood 
at the terminal prompt.

For what it's worth, both Totem and VLC are now working on a variety of 
video formats.  What is NOT working correctly is Firefox embedding 
Totem.  I just made another post re: Firefox File Types that explains 
what I had to do to see a working Totem from within Firefox.

Thank you again for your help.  I would never have found my way there alone.
