Take a look at this:

basically do the following:
in your /etc/apt/sources.list add the following lines:

deb http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf/ breezy free non-free
deb-src http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf/ breezy free
non-free

Then at the terminal:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.8-plugins
gstreamer0.8-plugins-multiverse gstreamer0.8-ffmpeg 
sudo apt-get w32codecs
sudo apt-get libdvdcss2
gst-register-0.8

This should handle most of your media needs. For that link select the
Windows Media options and enjoy. I think you have to install aditional
codecs to QT, if I find it I will let you know.
