Python or Perl?

Well, all the three of them are quite equivalent.
Each language has its weaknesses and its values. Perl perhaps has the
widest supporting community but python has nonetheless a quite good one.

If we go further, we could notice that though both the three languages
can be used for anything and everything, each one has taken a specific
lead that makes him the most appropriate for a kind of developements.
Where Perl5 is really good for text manipulation and has CPAN, Python
has a nice OO interface and starts being widely used for the web (Zope)
(where Perl CGI starts being a bit deprecated). I've been a little in
contact with Ruby so I won't mention.
All in all, I'd say that all these are complementary. Learn them all and
use the one you see as the most appropriate depending on what you want
to do.
