Your /etc/passwd likely has bad premisions.
-rw-r--r--  1 root root    769 2005-10-20 09:48 group
-rw-r--r--  1 root root   1357 2005-10-20 09:48 passwd
-rw-r-----  1 root shadow  891 2005-10-20 09:48 shadow
