I wonder if the OP is confusing the "What's New" from 2.10 to 2.12
page with the changelogs of 2.12.1 -> 2.12.2 (found here:

which all appear to just be (for the most part) bugfixes of minor standing.

I agree with ubuntu's policy on not backporting.  There is entirely
too much to maintain with this for so little gain.  If the OP wants
'cutting edge' gnome, upgrade to Dapper and hope your machine works
after every update (in most cases, it does). :)
