Most accelerated video-drivers (nvidia, ati) are imho not working with
smp-kernels or need different settings ...

First, try running X in vesa mode.

To reconfigure X, start the system in Single-User mode (the second option in
grub) ... Log in and run the command "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg",
don't use automatic detection and select vesa as server. Afterwards run
"sudo init 3", to get into the normal runlevel. X and gdm should start now.

If the system is working now, you may reconfigure X to use an accelerated
driver with the normal steps, and see if it was only a configuration
problem. If not stay with the unaccelerated drivers.

Sebastian
