'PPDEV' : how to install ??

Hi,

I have got a program ("avrdude") that makes use of the parallel port of
the machine.  Problem : it can't open the parport. Reading the program's
documentation, it says that it uses the "ppdev interface" to access the
parport. So I guess Ubuntu doesn't come with this by default, whatever
it is (library ? kernel module ?).
I seached Synaptic (with universe and multiverse enabled) for 'ppdev',
but it did't return a single match ! :-/

Hopefully one of the devs is reading this and can enlighten me ?? :-(
