Kernel Modules

Hi

Im checking out a couple of things with ubuntu, when i cat /etc/modules there 
are like 5 modules in there to load at boot. Well when i do a lsmod there are 
tons of extra modules loaded and i was wondering what loads all of them. They 
are not module dependencies because some of them have nothing to do with the 
ones in the modules file.
