A little update.  Sorry I was imprecise.

I've done a few more reboots of the machine with the RAID mirror.
This time it /didn't/ blank my home directory......
(But I get the same error message about the array being not clean.)

Either that particular problem comes and goes (unlikely I think) or
the OS has done something on it's own accord to remedy the problem
(but that does also sound kind of unlikely...?).

Still confused, but now on a higher level!
