Toshiba laptop - unable to start GDM

Hi,

I have bought a M60-153 and I try to install Ubuntu. I have choosen
(during install) the correct screen resolution (1440x900) and GDM
doesn't start (it seems to be such a generic error). So, I have
installed the fglrx driver (kernel module), "modprobe" it and nothing
has changed !
Could you help me ?!

(not very important : I had to install Ubuntu in "expert" mode because
it freezes when loading pcmcia)
