Rajiv, I'd recommend starting with Python, and perhaps the best place
to start is with Dive into Python, which you can find online here:
http://diveintopython.org/toc/index.html.
If you're interested in doing web-based apps (whether actually online
or just single-user or on a LAN), then I'd suggest starting with Rails
which is a framework for Ruby. http://www.rubyonrails.com/. It's also
got a great online community.
If you do go with Python though and want something similar to the
Rails framework, check out Django (http://www.djangoproject.com/. It's
new and I haven't tried it but it's supposed to be quite good and
developping quickly.
