Take a peek in the file /etc/fonts/local.conf - There are one or two
options in there that are commented out by default. To experiment, 
just uncomment the different sections and restart X. By the way, if
it's not obvious, this file uses HTML-like comments (like <!-- blah
-->) instead of the typical comments elsewhere in the system (a # per
line).

I personally like the looks of both hinting and subpixel hinting
turned on for CRT and LCD displays.
