I haven't seen this kind of a problem since fam (with Warty) was in
use. Every time I've had a problem unmounting a usb stick in Hoary
it's been because something was pointing at the device. IE - a
terminal window that has the current directory set to where the usb
stick is mounted, or an application that is looking at the device,
or something like that. (I don't think that these will show up as a
process that has a file open on the device, but I could be wrong.)

If nothing is being pointed at the device, then you will likely have
to pull the usb stick out and hope that no files get corrupted. I
recommend that you back them up to your hard drive first.

Sorry that I can't offer you a better solution.

we do not see the one which has opened for us.
