Skype : no window pops-up

I had the same problem using an older version from Skype in combination with 
ESD as well. I used to have to give the command "killall esd" to get Skype 
to function properly (under Gnome). However, with later releases of Skype 
the problem was solved.

Perhaps installing the latest version might help you?
