I claim no knowledge or experience of Python, but given you want to just dive 
into code and you have considered Python, why not read the contents 
of /usr/share/doc/diveintopython/ which I understand is installed by default 
on Ubuntu (I run Debian unstable). If not installed, it must be just an 
"apt-get" away.
