man not working anymore?

It has worked nicely for a while, $: man [anything] gave me everything about 
anything. However, since a few weeks it doesn't give me all that much 
anymore, just the very unfriendly error: "gdbm: Fatal Error". 

I've tried to reinstall man, but that didn't help a single bit. I now have 
to use the Gnome-F1>Help>Man Pages or a webpage, but sometimes I'd much more 
like to be able to just use commandline.

Anybody have an idea how to get my man working again?
