x86_64 kernel on i386 system

It is not as simple. You would obviously get a performance boost as your
processing power is theoretically doubled, however, you do not have any
64 bit libraries on your computer if you have and i386 system, which
means that no 64 bit programs would work which would negat the
performance advantage. As Ubuntu is a Debian based distro, you would
lose you 32-bit libraries when you installed the 64-bit ones, forcing
you to  make a fulle transparent 32-bit chroot to let your old 32-bit
programs work. While guides for most of this can be found in teh wiki or
through google, none of it is trivial and it is advised to amke sure you
knwo what you are doing before you start
