Unfortunately, modprobe normally says nothing when it works perfectly,
only when it fails. Another option would have been to ask you to use
the lsmod command and see if the lp module had already loaded. Since
you didn't get an error when you issued the modprobe lp command, the
lp module isn't failing. Did you try setting up a new printer after
issuing the command?
