FYI, you don't need root privileges to search with apt-cache, as it
requires only read access to the package database.

Also, if you find yourself searching the package list frequently, I
suggest you look into aptitude for searching.  It's got a much more
powerful search command.  Read the section called "Search Patterns" in
/usr/share/doc/aptitude/README (begins on line 1784) for an overview.
