I cannot login in after a fresh install, don't know root password, and it never asked me to create a user

there is a big difference between "no password" and "locked password".
there is absolutely no need to set a root password on a ubuntu box,
since the root account is safely locked and sudo/gksudo is used all over
the place. this method is btw also used on the unix based macos X
