I cannot login in after a fresh install, don't know root password, and it never asked me to create a user

What version of Ubuntu did you install? It should have asked you for a
username and password during installation; if it did not, something was
very badly and unusually broken.

Please use the recovery mode at the bootloader prompt to get a copy of
/var/log/installer/syslog to me.
