Since my previous posting I have gotten cinelerra to work. It seems that
the ALSA sound system was causing the crashes, by setting it to use OSS
all was peachy.



By the way, the Freenode cinelerra IRC is full of great people who will
bend over backwards to help you with your problems. Without them, I
would be spending my precious little Euros on WIN/Xp and Adobe Premiere
licenses  ](*,) 



The IRC is the best place to start if you want to make it work. Take
care if you're running a 64bit Ubuntu, you might have to compile
yourself (pretty easy, i can help if you need it)



So for me, things are looking brighter on the Ubuntu video front!  O:)
