I like the games Battle For Wesnoth, Frozen Bubble, and Super Tux. I
think they would all be appropriate for the 8 - 14 year range. Your
older kid will enjoy the long term playability of Battle for Wesnoth,
and everyone loves the mindless idiocy of Frozen Bubble.
All of the KDE games are nice too. Knights is the best darned Chess
front-end around. You can even play online against people on the free
chess servers. Very cool. I don't see it immediately in synaptic but
I'm sure there's a .deb out there in debian land. Atlantik is a
really neat KDE game that lets you play Monopoly against people
online.
It's easy to limit the KDE menu. Right click on the K and select menu
editor. Rease everything you don't want.
I would install koffice and let them play with that too, and leave the
text editor kate. It's a really nice one. Of course leave all of the
edutainment stuff, although some of it is moer aimed at teachers than
kids. Kstars however is so much fun and so is celestia. Celestia
isn't a game, it's educational, but it's as much fun as some games.
