fonts broken in hoary for old unix apps

I have no idea what the underlying cause of this is. Since I installed
Hoary, if I run X apps remotely on a Solaris box some fonts are not
rendered on my ubuntu X server, typically on buttons and menus.

These are rather old Xt based apps. Maybe it's some Xt resource thing.
I dunno. It always worked fine on Warty.

I'm attaching (sorry) a screenshot section showing some buttons that
should say things like "Login". Anyone know what causes this?
Obviously, this is completely unusable. This was taken with a tightvnc
Xvnc server. I can't find any font errors in the vnc server logs (in
~/.vnc/*.log).

I can't test with a different server right now because I don't have
access to the console.
